Getting organized has never been one of my strong suits, and I often would put my organization skills to the test at the end of the week. I often have grandiose ideas about what I’m going to get done over the weekend. By Sunday night, I’ve probably only tackled maybe half of the list if I’m lucky and then I beat myself up over it. I did my laundry, but my clothes aren’t folded. I didn’t work out like I planned to, and I don’t feel like cooking. Thinking about all the things I didn’t get done, makes me dread Monday even more, but then I realized there’s gotta be a better way! Here are some tips I’ve learned on how to get your week off to a good start and get organized:
Make a list of 3-5 you can realistically do within a day
Time after time, I have drawn up to do lists with 20 various things to do from reading to setting up dental appointments. When I look back at the list, I only accomplished 3-5 things from that to do list. Cutting down your list automatically helps you prioritize what are the 3-5 most important things you can actually accomplish with the time you have.
Sometimes we think we can do it all ourselves. In reality, we could use a little help. Enlist the help of a friend, family member, roommate or significant other, and say ‘I’m really swamped right now and I could really use your help, do you mind helping me with the dishes.’ Or, ‘I am so tired right now, and I could really use an extra pair of eyes, do you mind proofreading my resume.’
Lastly, say ‘no’ to all the extra and nonessential things you don’t really want to do. For example, ‘I would really love to go to brunch with you, but I’ve got a number of things I need to catch up on.’ Don’t feel bad for living your life on your terms. When you get in the habit of saying yes to YOU, life can change in an awesome way. Just think about all the naps you missed, time to yourself to just breathe and think. When you give too much of your time to people, places and things, you can begin to lose sight of all things that you enjoy most and you could begin to wear yourself out and resentful of others.
